Wednesday 23rd October 2024
5.30pm for approx 75 mins followed by light refreshments
Fitrovia Community Centre, 2 Foley St, London W1W 6DL
Also available live via Zoom
Factually based dramas are some of the most watched and talked about programmes on our screens. Some, like Mr Bates vs The Post Office can have such significance they change the national conversation and lead to new legislation being enacted.
This 75-minutes master class from leading, boutique, TV law firm, ABBAS, will examine the key legal and compliance issues when working in this genre.
Attend this session to ensure you know what is required from day one, so that your hard work isn’t undone by legal or regulatory issues which could have been avoided.
The session will draw upon a number of real-life examples, case studies, and clips to bring issues to life – and will cover the following:
- The spectrum of factually based dramas – from those loosely inspired by true stories to carefully researched docudramas
- What producers’ duties are to those depicted in factually based dramas
- Artistic / dramatic licence – how far can you go?
- How to safely manoeuvre your way through defamation, fairness and privacy issues?
- Duty of Care – what are producers’ obligations
- The law of contempt as it applies to factually based dramas.
- Some key business affairs issues - including optioning underlying works, and an introduction to tax credits.
- Questions - 15 minutes will be left at the end to put questions to the ABBAS team.
Speakers:
Nigel Abbas, CEO and Founder, leads both the legal and compliance and business affairs teams. He is a leading media lawyer who specialises in advising the television, film, advertising and publishing industries

Our Sponsors
The PMA is sponsored by a variety of companies in the film and television industry. We have a long-standing relationship with many of them dating back to the PMA’s inception in 1991.
PMA members benefit from the information and services that our sponsors can provide, while sponsors gain access to the upper echelon of Production Managers in the UK who are major purchasers for the industry.
Become a sponsor
We only have one sponsor per area of business but occasionally opportunities to become a sponsor of the PMA do arise.
Sponsors get the chance to meet our members several times a year, host parties, explain their services and write for our magazine The Bottom Line.
